Katana: a Japanese longsword traditionally used by the samurai. The Volkl Katana Ski: a brand-new, high-performance, powder-only weapon with a full wood core, vertical sidewalls, and two sheets of titanium. One slices through enemies; the other slices through powder. 111mm in the waist, the one-of-a-kind Volkl Katana features a Powder Channel, combining swallow-tail design with the ability to ride switch. It’s not a sword, but you just might feel like a samurai when you float it big in the pow and reach new levels of freeskiing euphoria. Release your inner warrior with the powerfully versatile Volkl Katana ski, and slay the mountain like it’s your prey.
  • Power Construction — The tried and tested sandwich construction is experiencing a renaissance in the freeski models of tomorrow. Power Construction describes the combination of two new Volkl technologies: Tough Box and Armed Edge—a combo for the most demanding conditions.
  • Tough Box Technology — Volkl has created a new core construction process for their new freeski and telemark models, the Tough Box. In this construction method, each wooden core is given extra strength by a 4x4 FiberWrap covering. In order to obtain maximum load in all directions, several layers of thin and highly durable fiberglass bands are wrapped around the core in a cross pattern. This construction allows the binding screws to be anchored even more securely into the skis and guarantee a firm hold even under extreme conditions.
  • ArmedEDGE — Give yourself an edge! All new freeride and freestyle skis from Volkl have an extra strong edge, which makes the ski even more robust. ArmedEDGE—a toughened steel edge. Volkl script is also stamped around the ski as an eye-catching feature. The logos are larger than the traditional edge anchor, offering more strength and resistance to breaking and pull-out. The transparent coated surfaces of the new freeride models lends the ArmedEDGE additional optical highlights. The design highlight of the 07/08 season!
  • Powder Channel — The Powder Channel innovation from Volkl, which is known from snowboard construction, is now available for skis! With the swallow tail of the Katana, this special construction has a considerable influence on the surface flow and allows the free rider to move into deep snow, just like surfing on waves. Feels just like surfing!
  • Increased Fiberglass Wrap in Mid-Body — Extra fiberglass wraps in the mid-body of the ski provide resistance to binding pullout. Radius: 20.6 @168 / 22.8 @176 / 25.2 @183 / 27.6 @190 / 30.2 @ 197

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Volkl Katana Skis 2008:

The Volkl Katana size was a little intimidating but after getting on this ski the intimidation faded quickly. I could ski this ski anywhere on the mountain. It was playful, not crazy stiff and I could also put the Katana on a rail on the groomers and it turned. Super fun ski. It felt similar to the K2 Seth or Rossi Steeze but slightly stiffer.
