Volkl Gotama Skis 2010: Changing such an iconic ski could only be done if Volkl improved it. The new Gotama features revised sidecut of 137-106-122mm. The powder and switch-riding performance is incredible, and yet skiers who want to use it as an every day ski will have greater versatility. Leave it to Völkl to introduce what just a few years ago would have been inconceivable: a rockered, big mountain twin tip that you can use every day at the resort.
  • Core and Flex Pattern – Multi layer wood core with butter zones. The front of the ski is stiff; since the rocker design is pre-flexed, added stiffness in front provides stability. The flex in the mid-body of the ski is medium, providing a transition to the softer tail, which allows ease of turning on the groomed, and maneuverability in powder.
  • Construction – Power Construction: Völkl's longest-running construction utilizes traditional vertical sidewalls and a torsion box internal layup and provides tremendous grip, stability, and sensitivity. Tough Box: Constructed by wrapping the core with layers of fibreglass strands. Made up of numerous 4 X 4 wraps, and oriented at different angles, Tough Box increases the strength of the connection between ski binding and ski.
  • Shape – A round overall shape allows easy smearing and speed control without sacrificing the tracking characteristics and firm snow performance.
  • Binding Compatibility – Requires wide brake bindings of at least 100mm

Comments about Volkl Gotama Skis 2010:

For the last few years it has been the case the if your ski had rocker and skied well in the soft snow, then it most certainly didn't perform well on the hardpack. With that, those who touted themselves as true skiers often carried around two pairs of skis and selected them depending on the conditions of the day. Now, if there is 20 inches of new snow on the ground I still suggest grabbing the biggest ski you can find, but if there is anything else, the 2010 Volkl Gotama is the perfect ski.

Volkl drastically changed their Gotama for 2010 and in doing so they made an even better ski. (hard to do though, the old Gotama was the gold standard of all-mtn. wide twins) This year's Gotama is fully rockered with enough stiffness to carve on the hardpack and bust through the crud. Its rocker allows you to float in the soft snow and slide the ski easily making it quick and playful. I was immediately surprised by how well this ski did in so many places.

If you are looking for one ski to do almost everything, this is a great ski for you. If you are looking for true powder ski that you will only be bringing out on the deepest of days, check out something wider under foot.

Comments about Volkl Gotama Skis 2010:

Volkl has what most consider a cult following with their Gotama ski over the past several seasons. It was known for doing it all and doing all well. Mediocre was not in it's vocabulary. While Volkl may have broken from tradition with the shape of the ski ie: Camber (previous models) vs Rocker (2010 model) they did not break from tradition with the versatility or performance of the ski. The rocker technology is not like many skis out there, it is essentially one shallow curve. Think continuous rocker on a wakeboard or a convex curve on a telescope. The tip and tail have been lowered closer to the snow as well. Once standing on the ski you essentially created a flat ski that with a very subtle rocker tip to tail. This translates to a forgiving yet very reliable edge hold. I bombed the Gotama down groomers and crud and it railed through both. The subtle rocker created an effortless transition from edge to edge without sacrificing grip at speeds. Definitely very surprised by how well it skied. Typically I prefer a softer flexing ski, but the stiff/medium flex helped me feel confident at speeds.
