K2 COOMBback Skis 2010: A powerful powder ski built for skiers the likes of Doug Coombs. An accomplished adventure skier, whether dropping into first descents via helicopter or skinning summits, needs a ski stable enough to hold an edge at high speeds yet light enough for touring. K2 retained the powder tip, progressive sidecut and buoyant 102 waist that gave the original Coomba superior predictability in erratic conditions, then added slight shovel rocker to give it quicker initiation and better versatility.
  • In honor of Doug, A percentage of all COOMBAck ski sales will be donated to the Coombs family. K2 will also donate a portion of the proceeds to the American Mountain Guide Association’s Chad Vanderham Endowment which is focused on improving guide education and safety.
  • Shape – 2/30 Tip Rocker, 14/12 Progressive Sidecut
  • Core and Flex Pattern – Fir/Aspen wood core for inherent strength, durability, and energy
  • Construction – Torsion Box Cut Braided Core construction keeps the ski light, lively, and powerful. Tip and Tail Attachments Holes to facilitate building a quick rescue sled, or the construction of a ski anchor
  • Binding Compatibility – Requires a brake width of at least 100mm

Comments about K2 Coomback Skis 2010:

Randonee: These skis are great for climbing with skins. They feel very light underfoot and they edge surpringingly well on on those dicey traverses. My STS skins fit and stay fixed perfectly. I did grind a notch into the tail. I would reccomend the 181cm for full-time touring because the 188's are a bit much to make kick turns with unless your taller than 6ft. I put springs in my Fritschi's which help. For breaking trail in deep snows these skis are excellent as the tips lift right up on top and the top sheet sheds snow well(waxed).
They work well in all conditions up to hard pack. On Hard Pack and Ice they can be skied very slowly but vibrate wildly at speed.I blew up and launched twice on these trying to ski fast on hard pack. I think this due to the rocker wagging in the breeze. These would not serve for extreme descents in icy locations at all. Although not a quiver of one these would perfectly compliment a quiver of two pairs. The Coomback is a better and more specialized soft snow ski than the Coomba was but at the cost of versatility.
Mine are 188's and work fine for me at 220lbs and 5'11". For most people the 181's would be a better fit unless you like to mach it in open terrain and variable snow. They can be turned in small areas but only because they are light and easy to throw around in their native powder habitat. They work best at moderate to high speed and wider radius turns(semi-big mountain style). You can push forward a lot but there is a limit and you can get launched. The tips are a bit rockered but these are not crude powder flotation tools.Play Hard and Have Fun!
