INTERVIEW

Coby, how long have we known each other now?
Man, it's been quite some time, maybe 8 years or so??

I remember way back when Jon Ollson and Boyd Easley started throwing Switch Mistys and you went out and learned those in two days. You’ve been a front runner here in the NW for as long as I have known you. What do you want to get out of skiing and where are you going from here with it?
Well that’s a great question Chris, haha. Let’s see.... Most importantly I want skiing to continue to be as appealing and serene to me as it always has been, therefore I see myself focusing less on the propaganda of it all and more on the simplicity and naturalisitc qualities of skiing. I just want to do what I love and do it with the people who make the experiences amazing.

You got invited out to partake in Poorboyz Jib Jam at Schweitzer this past season. How was that? Do you have any good memories that stand out from that trip, funny times or maybe a sick feature?
Jib Jam was unique... it was a combination of a photo-shoot and an online competition, judged by the viewers of the footage. It was unlike any other event I have been to; in addition they had some great features, with some SUPER lofty kickers. Most memorable moment was probably Mike Wilson's first attempt at the road gap, the guy landed flat on his back after clearing 100+ ft and jumped up like it was nothing.

We went out on shoot with Photog Ian Coble for Powder, you were skiing on Hellbents right? Pretty much everyone on the team is skiing on at least one pair of rockered skis. What’s your take on em?
My take.... ROCK THE ROCKED SKIS!! Seriously though, I think the rockered skis are amazing, they have transformed the way that powder can be skiied. If your reading this and your unfamiliar with them, GO DEMO A PAIR!!!! **use in powder**

Any other trends you see that are shaping skiing’s future?
Well there are actually quite a few that I see. Including double-flips, innovative competitions...etc... BUT the trend that has me the most excited really isn't a trend yet.... I would really like to see Backcountry Kite Skiing take off. I think M.S.P. films has some footage of if this year; so it's definitley going to an up and coming innovation for the industry. Personally though, I don't think there could be any greater combination than skiing and gliding above the mountains.

You bought a sled last year right? Did you use it much?
Yes, and at the same time a big astounding NO. :( What a disappointment that was. When I did use it though the powder was amazing, so at least I went on good days. My intent was to use it to access BC terrain, but considering we got dumped on nearly every day for the first half of the winter, it was easier to just ski Stevens Pass terrain.

So besides the sled and Hellbents for pow what other set ups are you rockin?
The entire K2 lineup. :) The new Extremes, Silencers, and Seth Vicious. K2 has been pretty good to me.

Working for evo gives me a chance to work together with a bunch of athletes including you. It’s a channel for me to put my stamp on the ski industry. Everyone has their own reasons but what makes you excited about evo?
Working with evo gives me the ability to network with some of the greatest people in the industry. Everybody at evo seems to understand and embrace life in much the same way I think I do. Live everday with respect and enjoy every moment. I think that should be the new evo slogan. ;) haha.
